In the autumn of 2018, I studied traditional Tibetan Buddhist thangka painting in Dharamsala, India, at the Centre for Living Buddhist Art, and completed my master’s degree in religious studies in 2020 at the University of Tartu, with a project titled "Creation Process and Canon of Tibetan Buddhist Thangka Painting." I am one of the few Estonians who have systematically acquired the necessary knowledge of iconometry for creating these specific paintings and drawings. In 2023, I lived in Dharamsala, India, for 9 months, deepening my technical knowledge of thangka painting with freelance thangka artist and Tibetan activist Karma Sichoe.
During my earlier art studies, I focused primarily on figurative compositions. Environmental studies led me to delve into plant and bird species, learning about them in more detail through drawing and painting. The greatest push towards pursuing thangka painting came from icon painting courses, after which I felt a strong urge to immerse myself in canonical art. The Faculty of Theology and Religious studies in Tartu University provided the best environment for this, and it was during my studies there that I discovered my true passion for Buddhist canonical art. Currently, I am studying conservation and restoration at the Pallas University of Applied Sciences in Tartu, hoping to focus on Buddhist art in this field as well, in order to understand the unique features of Buddhist canonical art even deeper.
